Are you paying too much for gas??
WHAT'S IN A CAR
Your car - best friend or worst enemy? You're driving down the
freeway, late to an important appointment, cars whizzing by. Suddenly your engine
stops and you hear the screech of brakes as you barely escape destruction. At
that moment, you probably feel it's your worst enemy. Or you're stopped at a red
light at night in a questionable neighborhood. Two young men begin to approach
your car. Quickly you press the door locks closed and make a right turn, accelerating,
blessing the hunk of metal around you. You land at the airport after an exhausting
week of meetings, take a shuttle to your car to find your somewhat dusty automobile
patiently awaitng you with all the familiarity of home. Most of us are so dependent
upon the car, yet do we really treat ours as if we can't do without it? A car
can be the means to earn a living, escape from where we work to a more idyllic
home setting, safety, a portable office, protection from the weather, even a couch
on which to take a quick nap behind secure door locks. Yet until it stops working,
few of us give this most important possession more than a brief thought that we'd
better fill 'er up before we run out. And then there's the astronomically rising
gasoline prices. Perhaps we feel so impotent about that problem, we won't allow
ourselves to consider how dependent we are upon that vehicle sitting in our driveway.
WHAT DOES IT REALLY COST?
It's tempting to save a few pennies on gas wherever
we can. After all, it gives us just a tiny feeling of control and it's kind of
fun to play the "watch the gas price" game and go where prices are lowest. Did
you ever consider, though, you might be playing with your life when you're playing
that game? You see, all gas is not equal. The reason off-brand gasoline is sold
for cheaper prices is because dealers can purchase it for less and the reason
they can purchase it for less is that they are not always getting the highest
quality gas. It may be a blend of different brands. It may not have additives
in it to help your engine run better. Basically, you get what you pay for. And
what you're paying for with top tier detergent gasoline like Shell is consistent
quality that not only gives you better performance, it helps your car last longer
and run more reliably. Don't you deserve the best for only pennies more? Isn't
your life worth the difference, never mind your trusty car?
COST VERSUS COST
The
life of your car affects how much you pay for it over a period of years. Yes,
it's nice to drive a brand new car every two years, but if you can't afford to
do so, it's wise to make the one your have last as long as possible. If you paid,
say, $10,000 for your car and it works reliably for you for 10 years, it has cost
you $1,000 per year. However, if it only lasts two years, that's $5,000 per year.
If you dirve, say, 50,000 miles in a year paying $3.00 per gallon for gas and
your car gets 20 mpg, you have bought 2500 gallons of gas and paid $7,500 for
that gas in one year. So say you can buy cheaper gas for $2.80 per gallon (a 6.66%
savings or $500) and the car doesn't last as long; then that cheaper gas could
actually be costing you up to thousands of dollars because you have to replace
your car. And there's more. If you take the time to get yourself a Shell MasterCard
(sorry, Canadians, yours is still in the works), you will receive a 5% rebate
on all your gasoline purchases when you use that card to buy gasoline at Shell.
Now your savings is really miniscule or nonexistent if you're shopping price.
